A Family friend just gave me a very nice guitar. I have never done any kind of music before, but want to learn to play it.

What is the best ‘free/cheap’ way to learn to play other than just ‘messing with it’?

      YouTube Videos? Internet Lessons? Books?

I’ve had my electric guitar for a couple months and so far I’ve just been looking at videos on youtube and learning riffs and such just messing around mainly. The styles I like playing are metal classic rock and electric blues (SRV Style). My question is the best way to improve overall guitar skills? Can anyone recommend a website with exercises or something or any other advice? Thx.

              My guitar playing sucks?

I been playing like 3 years. Took lessons about 2 months so far. I can solo some medium kinda stuff. Bat Country by Avenged Sevenfold is probably the hardest song I can play right now. I still struggle with sweeps and am also really nervous to play in front of people. Any advice? I feel like I suck for how long I’ve been playing. Do I? What is normal as far as skill progression with guitar?

My mom wants to cancel my guitar lessons?

Please help! I am very serious about learning guitar and I have a very good teacher that my dad knows well. The lessons cost /week at my local music store. We’ve been hit by the recession pretty bad lately. Now, my mother is threatening to cancel my guitar lessons because she’s not seeing the results she would like. She wants me to learn 20 bazillion well-known classic rock songs. I love Led Zeppelin, Boston and all but lately I’ve been getting into old Metallica and have been interested in learning how to improvise. (She thinks Metallica is complete garbage) So I took a couple lessons to learn some basic musical theory (Major/Minor/Pentatonic scales and 7 modes) that I could apply to guitar. She got angry because she thinks I’m wasting lessons, and therefore her money. Is there any way I could convince her otherwise?
